A treasure chest next to Luigi, collecting a Silver Diamond.
Treasure Chests are objects found by Luigi and first appear in Luigi's Mansion. There are a few different types of treasure chests in the game. Most chests contain Keys, though some contain Money/Diamonds/Jewels. These chests are listed below.

This is a scaled up version of the same Blue chest as the one containing ordinary keys.
These use a different model and have a slightly different decoration with the addition of three gold streaks above the red rhinestone.
Blue chests contain ordinary keys. Tan chests contain area keys. Green chests contain money (though some additionally contain a Silver Diamond). The chests in the Mirror Room (Fire Medal), the Kitchen (Water Medal), and the Tea Room (Ice Medal) contain Elemental Medals. The larger, red treasure chests that appear in the Hidden Room and the Sealed Room also contain money (though some also contain ghosts).
The chests are complex in shape, with similar design to a mushroom or Luigi's Cap and feature four metallic filigree shapes, two on the base and lid, accented by an oval ruby rhinestone on the front lid, with three metallic dots above. Four metallic dots either side suggest a leatherette covering material. The chest features a raised keyhole, a metallic trim and stands upon four ornamental feet, imitating real-world antique jewelry boxes. The interior of the chest is gold, however in the 3DS remake, the interior of the chest is red, making the chest design even more likely to be based on jewelry boxes.
The unique Hidden and Sealed Room chests use a different model and feature 3 metallic streaks, instead of the 3 dots as featured on other chests and have a slightly more regal, angular appearance.
Once a chest has been opened it cannot be closed again for the length of the game, even after area completion. However, the unique chests in the Hidden and Sealed Room close on their own accord after the room has reset.
Trivia[]
- The final Area Key is the only such Area Key not to be contained in a Tan/Gold Chest, instead it simply spawns from the Painting of a gold chest.
- The chest in the Hidden and Sealed Room are the only chests that reclose after opening them. All other chests cannot be closed again once opened.
