“I'm not afraid of you, fool! I fear only that infernal Poltergust 3000 you carry on your back! Stupid machine! But I... am a KING among boos! I swear it... I shall fear no mere house cleaning device!!!”
— King Boo, facing Luigi in Luigi's Mansion

King Boo is the supreme leader of all the Boos, and the main antagonist of the Luigi's Mansion (series). Easily one of the darkest and most malignant characters in the franchise, at least compared to the original series version, King Boo is almost as much of a threat as Bowser. King Boo is also called "The Master of Illusions" due to his power to create illusions and give his Boo army the power of Spirit Balls.

Debuting as the lead antagonist in 2001's Luigi's Mansion on the Nintendo GameCube, he would later go on to make numerous appearances in the various Mario sports and party games before ultimately making his grandiose return in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the Nintendo 3DS, where he once again played foil to the titular Green plumber. In 2018, he'd reprise his role as the main antagonist of the updated rerelease of the first Luigi's Mansion with Luigi's Mansion (3DS) on the Nintendo 3DS. And lastly, he was the main antagonist in the third entry in the Luigi's Mansion series, Luigi's Mansion 3, on the Nintendo Switch.

History

Pre-Luigi's Mansion

“The way you plead for help, Mario... I find it so... satisfying. Perhaps that is merely because I remember how much trouble you've caused me in the past.”
— King Boo, mocking Mario

It is known that, prior to the events of Luigi's Mansion, King Boo was a free spirit. Believed to have been causing grief and mayhem wherever he went. His power was eventually challenged by Professor Elvin Gadd, who managed to capture the largest boo in the King's army, Boolossus, with his invention, the Poltergust 3000, a modified shop-vac made specifically to capture and contain Ghosts.

Angered by the capture of his most powerful ally, King Boo mounted an assault on E. Gadd's laboratory in order to save Boolossus. After succeeding in his mission, he then went about rescuing all of E. Gadd's Portrait Ghosts, and using his magical capabilities to conjure a mansion, which the newly freed ghosts decided to take up residence within.

King Boo and his underlings took shelter within the mansion's walls. During this time, King Boo decided to make use of his powerful army of ghosts to exact revenge on the Mario Bros. as pay-back for all the Boos that fell to the brothers' hands in their past adventures. He does this by inviting them both to the mansion under the premise that Luigi had won the mansion in a contest. Mario had arrived first, and King Boo made swift work of him, trapping him in a painting and stowing said painting away in the Secret Altar beneath the mansion.

Luigi's Mansion

“Seriously, though... Who would actually believe that mansions get given away in contests?! Talk about stupid!”
— King Boo, calls the Mario Brothers out on their stupidity and believing his lie

During the events of Luigi's Mansion proper, King Boo is nowhere to be found, he and his minions instead hiding away within the secret door in the Storage Room. Luigi eventually makes his way to said room and unwittingly opens the secret door, releasing the Boos and their King. However, the planned surprise attack goes awry when the boos notice that Luigi is in possession of the Poltergust. Fearing for his underling's safety, King Boo orders them all to hide. After this, E. Gadd calls Luigi back to the lab to explain his history with the King. After this point, King Boo remains mostly by the wayside save for two instances.

The first of these is occurs in the Bottom of the Well, where Luigi can see him through the mouth of the Lion Head Statue connecting the room to the Secret Altar, an interaction necessary to get the key to the Rec Room. This interaction has Luigi staring through a lion-shaped statue and them gasping at the sight, with the camera directly shifting over to King Boo staring at a painting.

The second interaction will occur if Luigi attempts to enter the Secret Altar without enough Boos captured, in which he will freak out after mistaking Luigi for Mario, before using the combined strength of himself and his fellow remaining Boos to blow Luigi away from the door.

Outside of these instances, his only other major appearance is in the Secret Altar itself, where he will suck Luigi through a portal and bring him to an illusionary version of the roof for the final confrontation. King Boo utilizes a Bowser Costume to attempt in defeating Luigi, but the plumber ultimately foils the ghost's plans, sucking him up into the Poltergust, after which E. Gadd portrifies him alongside all the other ghosts, rendering him harmless...or so he thought.

It's revealed during Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon that E. Gadd had at some point sold King Boo's portrait at a garage sale. Mishandling of it by the third party ultimately allowed the disgruntled ghost tyrant to escape. He had obtained a new, more powerful crown and with it, he sought to exact his revenge on E. Gadd and the Mario Bros.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

“Hey, remember that time you trapped me in a painting for all eternity? Good times. But guess what? I GOT OUT! And now I'm painting the town RED!”
— King Boo, before engaging Luigi in battle

In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, King Boo is once again the main villain and final boss.

Once King Boo got out of the painting he went back to working on his evil schemes and goes to Evershade Valley (setting of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon) to shatter the Dark Moon, which is the only source that keeps ghosts from going hostile. Once he did, all of the ghosts went rampant, forcing E. Gadd to take shelter at a bunker. He also abducts Mario yet again and, in a painting, once again to prevent him from doing anything to mess up his evil plans.

KingBooLM2Intro

King Boo Prior to battling Luigi

With E. Gadd out of the way and Mario incapacitated, King Boo planned use this army of ghosts to invade and conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, usurping Princess Peach and becoming the supreme ruler of the land.

His boss fight, King Boo's Illusion, is much more involved than on the Roof in the first game. King Boo attacks Luigi with a series of vicious weapons and body slams, with each phase growing more aggressive and frantic, and bridged with complex chase sequences.

In the first, third and fifth phases, the objective is to render King Boo vulnerable by trapping him on the shadows of spiked balls that are launched. However, King Boo is not always vulnerable. His main attacks are to quickly dash into Luigi or do a full-on body slam. If there are no spiked balls during the battle, they will be summoned from the sky. If there are, they will be either launched up or remain there. When looked at, he will stay still. When flashed at, he will back off, disappear, and then reappear somewhere else.

When defeated on his first and third phases, he will come back out of the Poltergust and force Luigi into the second phase. King Boo seamlessly becomes insanely larger during the transition cutscene (Most likely due to the illusion aspect) and starts rolling at Luigi through a seemingly endless hallway. It is full of pillars, cabinets, ice, sand, guard suits, and several more items to try and stop Luigi. If he connects, Luigi takes damage. King Boo can also cast lightning bolts on a few items to make them even more effective at stopping Luigi. The hall ends after a series of gear springs and King Boo enters the next phase.

Upon defeat, Luigi will vacuum the ghoul into the Poltergust 5000 once more and claim his crown as treasure yet again.

Luigi's Mansion 3

“UGH! That's it! I'm sick to double death of you!”
— King Boo, frustrated that Luigi keeps evading capture

After some time, King Boo was freed from his painting by his admirer, Hellen Gravely. The two teamed up to get revenge on the Mario Bros. and their friends. They sent a fake invitation to Luigi saying he was invited to The Last Resort, a luxurious hotel. Luigi obviously fell for the trap and invited not only Mario but also several Toads and Mario's potential lover, Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom. He also captured E. Gadd (Hellen lied to the scientist that they had a massive ghost collection), making sure Luigi has no Poltergust to defend himself with this time.

After night fell, King Boo began his plan and started trapping Luigi's "vacation party" in frames. Luigi, who was woken up by Peach's screaming, investigated their disappearance and was cornered by both the ghastly ghoul and Hellen at the RIP Suites. King Boo voiced his hatred of the plumber and chased him down the hallway, intent on capturing him. Luigi managed to escape thanks to a laundry chute, and after acquiring the Poltergust G-00 and saving E. Gadd, they went to work on saving Luigi's friends one by one and sucking up the Hotel staff whom King Boo controlled with his new crown.

As Luigi rescued his friends, King Boo got more and more fed up with Hellen's and the staff's failure to kill Luigi and, predicting the plumber would ultimately capture Gravely as well, took Peach's painting to the Rooftop and kept Mario's painting in the Main Observation Room of the Master Suite where Hellen resided. That way, when Luigi rescued Mario and they made their way to the roof to rescue Peach, King Boo would ambush them, trap them in the paintings, and finally claim victory.

True to King Boo's prediction, Luigi managed to capture Hellen after battle and rescued Mario, who led his younger brother to the roof. They rescued Peach, but as they were celebrating, King Boo ambushed them. Revealing he captured E. Gadd and the rest of the Toads, he went into a rant about how much he hated Luigi and that he should've run away like a coward when he had the chance, and how he sees the staff as worthless for their failure to kill him. He proceeded to trap Mario and Peach in the painting, but Luigi's Polterpup knocked him out of the way before he could be trapped.

Angered that Luigi just refused to accept defeat, King Boo yelled that he would kill the plumber himself, "once and for all", engaging both him and his gooey counterpart, Gooigi in battle.

In the battle, King Boo unleashes a barrage of attacks on Luigi. First off, he always starts off stage changing his jewel color to blue. Then, he lights up some of the tiles and soon after zaps them all. In stage 2 even more are lighted, and in stage 3 every tile but one is lighted up. He also cartwheels and then whips his tongue on the stage for a couple of times, then swipes it across the whole stage, meant to be dodged with a Burst. In stages 2 and 3, the stage swipe is replaced with King Boo swirling his tongue sideways, creating gaps to walk and boosted across that are constantly changed. He also turns his jewel orange and then starts creating rolling fireballs. They can be blown away or dodged, as the roll somewhat slowly. Lastly, he conjures a spiked ball and throws it. The Spiked ball breaks into bombs, which Luigi should then fire at King Boo to knock him out. Luigi and Gooigi should then grab his tongue and slam him 3 times. If they fail to slam him, he gets up and they have to continue battling.

If he enters phase two, he conjures a second version of himself. His second version snarls so severely his eyes are barely visible, and he also only has 2 of his teeth. During this phase, he also starts using a new attack in which he and his clone jump up and slam a random spot on the ground. The Real King Boo also creates a shockwave similar to Ug. If the real King Boo is shot with a bomb, the fake one disappears.

If he enters his third and final phase, a cutscene appears where he comes out of the painting and then turns it into a gigantic one which will trap Luigi inside, having a timer of 4 minutes before the painting manages to trap him, leading to a Game Over. He then creates a third clone and starts using an attack where all 3 clones each throw 2 spiked balls straight up. Instead of the spiked balls landing, a bunch of pre-ignited bombs start landing and roughly follow Luigi. The bombs are also movable by the Poltergust, and these ignite too soon to shoot at King Boo.

Luigi eventually managed to weaken King Boo to finally capture him again with the Poltergust, and after giving his nemesis an angry glare (which made Luigi turn his face away scared for a second before returning him a brave glare), the ghoul realized he was done for this time and was sucked into the Poltergust with his signature cry.

In the credits, a distraught King Boo is shown trapped in the gallery, with a delighted Hellen Gravely besides him, who enjoys her little moment with her idol, despite being in the same position as him.

Personality

King Boo, unlike most villains in the Mario series, has demonstrated a remarkable amount of cunning, ruthlessness, malice, sadism, and pragmatism in his actions. He shows, or rather tells how he truly wants little more than for the Mario Brothers to suffer for their transgressions against his kind, making him a worse and more competent threat than Bowser (though ironically, these two villains are somewhat alike as they employ the exact same strategy in their games, with Bowser constantly kidnapping Princess Peach to irritate Mario, and King Boo trapping Mario and his friends in order to trap Luigi as well).

He and his minions make quick work of Mario when he arrived at the mansion and elect to hide and surprise Luigi in order to make his expected defeat all the more torturous. Though this plan ultimately fails, King Boo never loses his confidence in Luigi's assured defeat.

Throughout the course of the first game, he mostly remains confident and level-headed, even showing concern for his fellow Boos, ordering them to "scram" once it comes to light that Luigi has the Poltergust with him. His unwavering stance is only shaken when Luigi tries entering the Altar without enough Boos in his possession, in which he briefly mistakes him for Mario, although he collects himself shortly after realizing its Luigi. In the second game, he seems to have become noticeably more unhinged and psychotic, and he fights Luigi directly as opposed to using external assistance and no longer cares for his minions, putting them in harm's way at least once and treating them as common casualties. This change seems to have remained consistent for the third game, where King Boo can visibly be seen scowling at Luigi during the chase sequence and calls Hellen Gravely, who freed him and her staff useless. Ever since his first loss, King Boo has more or less ditched all his redeeming qualities.

Branching off of this, King Boo seems to have an extreme dislike of losing in any capacity, and he is shown to grow increasingly irrational and deluded the more he loses in short succession. When he lost Boolossus, he attacked the lab to get him back, after losing to Luigi, he shattered the Dark Moon in retaliation once freed (resulting in a fight which endangered the fabric of reality), made his intentions to usurp the Mushroom Kingdom very clear while fighting Luigi, and once more, he seems to have lured Luigi and friends into the Last Resort Hotel in order to capture all of them purely in an effort to defeat the green plumber once and for all. As judging by the giant painting he creates to trap both himself and Luigi at the end of his boss fight in Luigi's Mansion 3, he no longer seems to care if he wins or not, as long as Luigi loses.

His hatred of the jolly green plumber eventually extended to Princess Peach and the Toads, whom he also wishes to capture, despite the fact that they did not have much to do with his imprisonment in the prior games. One of the reasons for him to do so could be that due to his hatred for Luigi and Mario, he now targets and imprisons "anyone" who gets in the way, even with the slightest association with the Mario Brothers. Because the Mario Bros. work for the Mushroom Kingdom, he might now see the entire Mushroom Kingdom as his enemy. It could also be that he simply wants to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, as he stated in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Appearance

King Boo had many physical design changes throughout his lifetime in the games.

In his debut appearance, special effort was put into designing King Boo to help differentiate him from other, more typically-designed Boos. He was given a bluish-green complexion as opposed to white, a deep purple mouth and tongue instead of the ordinary red, and he had dark shadows beneath his eyebrows, with bright, pinkish-red eyes that glowed through. Atop his head was a crown which consisted of a golden base with a flower petal-esque inset holding a bright red jewel cut into the shape of a hexagonal bi-frustum. His laugh, worth mentioning, was tailored to be far more menacing than the typical Boo laugh. This grungier sound was performed by Toru Asakawa and has been reused for nearly all appearances of King Boo since.

In between the first and second Luigi's Mansion games, King Boo would return for a bunch of sports and party-related outings, sporting a different look from his debut game, being little more than a slightly larger Boo with a golden crown encrusted with multiple small jewels as opposed to one big one. The most likely reason for this change was to make King Boo appear less disturbing to younger players, who were more likely to be playing these games. King Boo's design from Luigi's Mansion 3 appears in Mario Kart Tour as one of his available costumes. In that game, a golden variant of King Boo's basic spin-off design also appears.

Worth noting is an individual with the same name who appeared in Super Mario Sunshine in the stage, Sirena Beach. This King Boo was drastically different from any other incarnation of the character. Given that most of the Isle Delfino fauna was markedly different from its Mushroom Kingdom counterparts, Boos included, it's widely accepted that this variation of King Boo is likely a different individual entirely. He is very large with a massive, slobbering mouth and tongue, small blue eyes with flat pupils, and a typical kingly crown worn crookedly on his head. Worth noting is that King Boo does mention a previous defeat at the hands of Mario, however, this is likely more coincidental than anything, given Mario Sunshine released after Luigi's Mansion, and the two Kings are so radically different in appearance.

With the release of Dark Moon, many fans rejoiced as King Boo returned to his original Luigi's Mansion design, with some minor alterations. His complexion has been changed to a very cold, chalky white, with intense shading so as to make him appear more striking. In addition, his mouth and tongue have been changed to a deep bluish-purple in colour, and his eyes have been changed to bright pinkish-purple. The shadow under his eyebrows has been heavily intensified. Lastly, his new crown, after Luigi had taken the previous one, was changed into a bright pink one that matched his new eyes. Moving forward, this would be King Boo's standard appearance for all future Luigi's Mansion entries, with his more standard appearance still being used for Mario spin-off games.

In Luigi's Mansion 3, he is mostly the same as in Dark Moon, albeit he is much larger, and has a vicious scowl on his face as opposed to the characteristic Boo smile. The biggest change is his new Crown, which now resembles a glowing pink, brilliant diamond as opposed to the simpler bi-frustum cuts of the previous two entries.

Worth noting is that his appearance in the 3DS remake of the original Luigi's Mansion reflects all of the changes in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, except for his crown, which remains red like in the original release.
