“That's my bro!”
— Mario, congratulating Luigi for saving him and Evershade Valley

Mario is the tritagonist of Luigi's Mansion, the protagonist of the main Mario series and Luigi's older brother. In the Luigi's Mansion series, Mario was trapped in a portrait by King Boo on three separate occasions as an act of revenge against the bros.

History[]

Mario is Luigi's brother and the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, he and Luigi have fought against Bowser and his forces many times and have always managed to save Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom with the help of their friends.

Mario is much braver than Luigi and has gone on a lot adventures without him. Luigi, on the other hand, stayed at home most of the time, though, he would sometimes accompany Mario on some of his adventures. Regardless, Mario and Luigi have fought and defeated plenty of Boos in their adventures, which greatly enraged King Boo, leading to the event of the first game.

Luigi's Mansion[]

When Mario heard that Luigi had won a mansion in Luigi's Mansion, he asked Luigi to go for a celebration there. Mario arrived long before Luigi did and was captured by King Boo and had to be rescued.

Luigi can find some of his items (which are required for Madame Clairvoya to be captured) lying around the mansion, which include:

His Hat (Found in the laundry room.)

Letter saying "LOOK OUT FOR BOOS" (Found in the birdhouse in the courtyard.)

Star (Found on the moon of the observatory.)

Glove (Found in the projection room.)

Shoe (Found in a chest after defeating the twins. In the 3DS Hidden Mansion, it is found by defeating Slim Bankshot.)

Mario was first seen in Area 3 through the Secret Altar in the Bottom of the Well. Luigi saw him, but was unable to reach him, because he could not fit through the lion statue. The Secret Altar is accessible in Area 4, but Luigi will need 40 (45 in the PAL Hidden Mansion) Boos to reach Mario's.

Once Luigi captures enough Boos, he enters King Boo's room where Mario can be seen, but Mario cannot be saved until after the final confrontation. After King Boo is defeated, Mario faints in his painting and Luigi takes him to Professor E. Gadd to restore his brother. Mario then goes through the Ghost to Painting process in reverse, extracting him from his painting. Mario bursts out of the machine, dizzy, as Luigi laughs tearfully that his beloved brother is okay.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]

Mario was trapped again in the game's sequel, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. However, this time it is not revealed until much later in the game, and instead hinted (quite obviously, at that) through the Toad pictures given at the end of each Toad-escort mission. The Boos carry his portrait around in a sack, in which part of it is revealed each time until the very last picture where his whole body is revealed.

During the fight against King Boo, Luigi is shown his painting in which he reaches for it until it disappears and King Boo shows up. Once he is defeated, the painting is resting against some rubble and Luigi can finally free him. After Mario is saved at the end, he praises Luigi for saving him and for his heroic acts. After that, Luigi and the Toads who were also freed from paintings before Mario restored the Dark Moon, restoring the minds of all the ghosts of Evershade Valley.

Luigi's Mansion 3[]

Mario accompanies Princess Peach, Luigi and some Toads when they are invited to the The Last Resort Hotel of Luigi's Mansion 3. Later that night, they are all revealed to have been trapped in paintings by King Boo. This leaves it all up to Luigi, to rescue them.

Later, his portrait has been revealed in the Main Observation Room of the Master Suites, which is on the 15th floor of The Last Resort Hotel. After defeating Hellen Gravely, Luigi releases him with the Dark-Light Device. After being released, he bursts with joy for being reunited with his brother, and gives Luigi a big hug. Later, he leads the way to the rooftop where Princess Peach is, reuniting with her. However, it was all a trap set by King Boo.

King Boo tries to trap all of Luigi's Crew in portraits. All of them getting trapped again except Luigi, but after resulting victorious against the king of Boos, he releases them again with the Dark-Light Device. After Luigi defeats King Boo, Mario praised his brother with "That's My Bro." and rebuilt the New Hotel with his crew for Ghosts Habitat. where The Last Resort had been destroyed. After finishing the rebuilding, he leaves with his crew without E Gadd, Gooigi, and all the Ghosts.

Personality[]

“OH NOOOOOO!”
— Mario, crying over Peach's condition.

Unlike his friends, Mario is completely flat when it comes to personality, not undergoing any character development in any of the games he appears in. Nintendo stated that Mario's personality is kept simple so he can be reusable in other settings. Despite this, in Luigi's Mansion 3 he shows more personality and reactions about what happens to him and those he loves on the hotel, especially towards Luigi and Peach.

Unlike Luigi, who is a massive coward, Mario is adventurous, outgoing, courageous, headstrong, and incredibly reckless. It is stated in Luigi's Mansion that he put up a fight against the Boos despite being drastically outnumbered.

According to Luigi, Mario always puts his cap in a washing machine instead of hand-washing it, showing him as (in Luigi's words) "careless". In the first game, he screams and cries for help, yelling "what's the holdup?!" at Luigi in a frustrated tone, though this might've also been partly out of desperation and fear.

His recklessness is best shown in the third game, where despite Luigi's warnings, he immediately rushes to the roof after his rescue to save Peach from being turned into a portrait, despite King Boo being there, repeatedly panicking and crying over Peach's condition and begging Luigi to help.

He appears to have a fixation on food, as shown at the beginning of the third game, where he immediately went to a table filled with food to eat a slice of cake, only for Polterpup to eat it. This is further shown in his room at the RIP Suites, which is littered with pizza boxes.

Trivia[]

  • If one is near the well in the Courtyard, Luigi can hear that Mario is yelling, "Hey Luigi! What's the holdup?!"
  • In the files of Luigi's Mansion, Mario has a speech icon that shows his head, it was going to be used for when Mario was going to talk, but since there was only one line of text for him in the game, Nintendo did not add it because it would be a waste of space. However, the unused speech icon was used in the 3DS remake when his name was being mentioned.
  • Mario's artwork for Luigi's Mansion was taken directly from Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64.
  • Mario's items are in different places now in the Hidden Mansion Mode, switched over in the Luigi's Mansion (3DS).
