The Nintendo 3DS is the fifth installment in the DS series, and is the successor to the Nintendo DSi XL. On the 3DS, there is no need for 3D glasses, even though the games are in 3D. This is known as "Autostereoscopy". The system was first revealed at E3 2010 in Los Angles, California, coming in many different colors, plus the bottom screen is larger than the top screen.

The price for a Nintendo 3DS is $249.99. The 3DS game cards have a little groove in them, preventing them to be played on other Nintendo DS systems.

The Nintendo 3DS has a 3D display, two cameras, one above the top screen, and one on the outside lid. There is a 3D depth slider, to change how much 3D is displayed. A gyroscope, a motion sensor, a new circle pad located right above the D-pad. Other buttons were moved, such as the A,B,X,Y buttons were slid up a little bit to make room for the Power button. The home button (previously seen on a Wii Remote), was also added underneath the bottom screen, along with the START/PAUSE button, and the SELECT button. It can also locate Wi-Fi signals and other Nintendo 3DS's.

The Nintendo 3DS also has a 2 GB memory card, included, to expand the internal memory, and a new charging dock to charge instead of a power cord, but a Nintendo DSi power cord can be used to charge the 3DS. The 3DS battery life ranges from 3 to 5 hours while playing normal software, and if the brightness setting is set higher, the system will use more power. To charge it completely, it must be docked or charged for approximately 3 hrs. 30 min.

As of now, the Nintendo 3DS comes in two colors: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black. Every 3DS system has a black inner upper lid. A Flare Red Nintendo 3DS was scheduled to be released in Japan on July 14, 2011. Different colors like gold and purple have been confirmed at E3 2010.

The Mii Maker is the same as the Mii Channel on the Wii and Wii U, where you make little characters called Miis, which is Nintendo's version of avatars. You can make one of yourself, a friend, a family member, or anyone else. You can use the Mii characters to play in games such as Mario Kart games, Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, and many more.
