The Poltergust 5000 is a Poltergust model invented by E. Gadd that first appears in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. It is the successor and improved version of the Poltergust 3000 from Luigi's Mansion. With the Poltergust 5000, however, Luigi is forced to charge flashes with a new object called Strobulb, rather than just point the flashlight to stun ghosts.

Poltergust 5000[]

Obtaining the Poltergust 5000 is necessary for Luigi's quest to restore the Dark Moon. It is obtained in the first mission of Gloomy Manor, found in the Garage. Luigi must open up the hood of the car to find it.

Super Poltergust[]

After collecting 20,000G in the Dark Moon Quest or ScareScraper, the Poltergust 5000 upgrades to the Super Poltergust, in which it allows the A-Pull meter to fill up faster, allowing ghosts to be sucked in at a much quicker rate. In terms of design changes, the Super Poltergust has blades on the wheels and two gray exhaust pipes on the top.

Functions[]

Suction and Blow[]

The Poltergust 5000 does the same thing as the Poltergust 3000 in Luigi's Mansion, as holding R will vacuum and the L button will blow things away.

Strobulb[]

Main article: Strobulb

The Strobulb is an attachment for the Poltergust 5000, different to the Flashlight from the original Luigi's Mansion. It can be used by pressing A and can also activate green receptors created by Professor Elvin Gadd.

If the player decided to hold A for a bit of time, the Strobulb will flash ghosts at a long range. You can stun up to 5 ghosts at a time. It's also effective against Spiders, Bats, and Mice.

Dark-Light Device[]

Main article: Dark-Light Device

The Dark-Light Device is a device that can be used after finding it in "Visual Tricks", it is on a table in the Lab, but the player needs to defeat some ghosts in the Lab in order to attach it to the Poltergust 5000.

In order to use it, the player can hold the Y button, it can uncover invisible secrets that the player couldn't see earlier, and uncover keys in paintings as well (at the cost of a meter).

Power Surge[]

The Power surge (also referred to as the A-Pull meter) is a technique that the player can use when sucking up a ghost. Once the meter has been charged, the player can use the A button to drain a chunk of the ghost's health in an instant.

The Power Surge has 3 levels. Level 1, which is colored blue, deals 10 damage. Level 2, which is colored green, deals 20 damage. Level 3, which is colored red, deals 50 damage. This also spawns a certain amount of money upon capturing a ghost; level 1 gives 3 coins, level 2 gives a gold bar, and level 3 gives 3 gold bars. If sucking up more than one ghost, an extra gold bar will spawn when they are defeated.

The Power Surge was replaced by the Slam of the Poltergust G-00 in Luigi's Mansion 3.

Upgrades[]

The Poltergust 5000 can be upgraded by spending the money the player got during missions and ScareScraper.

Gold required Upgrade
2,000G Power Surge Level 2 is unlocked, allowing players to deal more damage if they charge up the surge longer.
4,000G The Dark-Light Device has increased duration, about 2x the original.
7,000G Power Surge Level 3 is unlocked, allowing players to deal even more damage if they charge up the surge more.
10,000G The Dark-Light Device gets an even longer duration to about 3x the original.
20,000G The Super Poltergust is now unlocked, allowing to suck up ghosts faster and fills the power bar.

Trivia[]

  • It has been called the Poltergust 5000 and not the Poltergust 4000. This is because that title is already taken in another invention of the professor, which functions as a drivable vehicle for Luigi, which debuted in Mario Kart DS.
  • In the ScareScraper, the Poltergust 5000 comes in 4 different colors, blue, orange, pink and green, to match the color of the hat and overalls of every player.
  • Luigi's final smash in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U includes the Poltergust 5000.
