The Shrewd Possessor (known as Scornful Possessor in British English localizations) is the fourth Possessor that Luigi faces in his journey. He is fought in the mission, "Chilly Ride" of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. He holds the fifth Dark Moon piece.

Physical description

Ghost

Like all the other Possessors, the Shrewd Possessor appears as a white ghost with horns coming from his head. The only difference is the number of horns, as this Possessor has two main horns that branch off into two each (for a total of four). His horns have a strong resemblance to reindeer antlers.

Ice Monster

Shrewd Possessor turns into Ice Monster

The Shrewd Possessor possessing the frozen lake, transforming into the Ice Monster.

The form that the Shrewd Possessor takes is a large, monstrous face entirely of ice, with a large jaw and two gray eyes. This form is similar to the frozen monster face seen in the Coward's Chasm.

Dark Moon Quest

Prior to "Chilly Ride"

In "Across the Chasm", if Luigi looks into the window of the Workshop, he sees the Shrewd Possessor throwing bombs at a Fuzzball. After he notices Luigi, he pounds his chest angrily and dives into the frozen ground, then appears in front of the window and scares Luigi.

Overview

In "Chilly Ride", when Luigi enters the Workshop, the Shrewd Possessor will scare Luigi as he turns around from closing the door. He will then possess a lake of ice, turning it into a giant, monstrous face of ice, and proceed to burrow himself underground to escape. Luigi looks down the hole his new opponent made, and a barrel knocks the legs off a table, and a bomb sled trips Luigi into the sled it is on, thus starting the fight.

Battle

Lmdmguide145

Luigi destroying the Possessor's ice shields.

To defeat the Shrewd Possessor, Luigi fires bombs from an overheating bomb sled. These bombs are used to destroy ice shields covering his face. Once a shield is destroyed, Luigi has 50 seconds to destroy the rest or else the Possessor will regenerate the shields. Take note that if the bomb sled overheats for too long, it will cause an instant Game Over. Once all of the sheets have been destroyed, the Possessor will open his mouth, lunging at Luigi. Carefully fire the bomb in his mouth with timing to avoid repeating the phase as well as sustaining heavy damage.

The Possessor about to charge through a portal.

Once his icy monster form is destroyed, the Shrewd Possessor will attack by charging through three portals, though this can be avoided if Luigi is quick enough to stun and capture him. Like before, Luigi has five chances to capture the Possessor once he is stunned or else he will return to the ice if not quick enough.

First phase

In the first phase, Luigi needs to destroy eight ice shields.

Second phase

In the second phase, Luigi needs to destroy nine ice shields. The Possessor also moves slightly faster. When fighting the Possessor directly, the middle portion of the snowy ground will be icy.

Final phase

In the final phase, Luigi needs to destroy ten ice shields. The Possessor also moves at his fastest rate. When fighting the Possessor directly, more parts of the snowy ground will be icy.

Aftermath

Upon capturing the Shrewd Possessor and collecting the fifth Dark Moon piece, the Shrewd Possessor is sent to the Ghost Container and E. Gadd and Luigi clear the path towards the Treacherous Mansion. In Severe Infestation, despite the Shrewd Possessor being caught in the previous mission, he can still be seen through the Workshop, throwing bombs at a Fuzzball, but will not notice the player. For some reason, the Workshop cannot be entered, when there is nothing blocking the door. Upon defeating King Boo once again, Luigi and the Toads restore the Dark Moon back to its original condition, returning all of the ghosts in Evershade Valley back to their friendly selves. The Shrewd Possessor is freed from the Ghost Container, though is never seen in the ending or credits.

Skills and abilities

Skills

  • Possession: Like all Possessors, the Shrewd Possessor can possess something to gain new abilities. He possesses a frozen ground to create a icy monster.
  • Charge: When not possessing the ice, the Shrewd Possessor can generate a purple barrier around himself and charge at Luigi with fast speed.

Higher-level powers

  • Transmogrification: The Shrewd Possessor is able to alter the appearance of what he is possessing, just like the Grouchy Possessor. He uses this to alter the frozen ground into a icy monster face.
  • Cyrokinesis: As the Ice Monster, the Shrewd Possessor can control and manipulate ice. He uses this to make ice shields protecting his face.
  • Portal Creation: When charging at Luigi in his ghost form, the Shrewd Possessor can also create purple vortex-like portals to go through, and teleport somewhere else within the Frozen Pit.

Ghost Container description
Flag of USA "This possessor turned into a huge icy monster and tried to escape with the Dark Moon piece by tunnelling down through the Secret Mine. I thought Luigi was a goner for sure!"
Flag of Europe "Assuming the former of a huge icy monster, this Possessor tunnelled down through the mine in an effort to escape with his Dark Moon piece. Luigi was lucky to survive the ordeal!"

Trivia

  • This Possessor is the only Possessor that creates an entirely new area during the fight, as he is originally found inside the workshop but during the fight it is an entirely new area called the Frozen Pit.
  • The Shrewd Possessor represents the S in "GHOST" as the first letters of all the possessors form the word.
  • After destroying the Shrewd Possessor's icy monster form using bombs after each phase, in the cutscene, the Shrewd Possessor uses his white skin, regardless if he is on his orange or red skins.
  • The fact that the Shrewd Possessor creates portals to charge through possibly refers to the fact that E-Gates where introduced in the Secret Mine.
  • In Across the Chasm, when he is seen in the Workshop attempting to kill a Fuzzball with bombs, the Dark Moon piece is not seen in him, but is there when he is fought in Chilly Ride. This could be a oversight by the developers, or King Boo had not given him the Dark Moon piece yet.
  • The way the Shrewd Possessor possesses a frozen lake and reconstructs it into a icy monster face is taken directly into Luigi's Mansion 3, with the boss, Captain Fishook where he possesses the floor on the pirates ship, and rereconstructs it to resemble his face.
